In practice the process is rather different depending on whether you are sending files to a printer/MFD from a Managed Cluster workstation or from your own computer elsewhere on the network.
- To print from your own computer it will be necessary for you to install the DS-Print service - support and instructions at How can I print?
DS-Print managed printers and MFDs are available in Managed Cluster rooms in the University Information Service and many other University institutions. They are also available in various institutions independent of any Managed Cluster via the DS-Print service. Information about what is available in a particular institution should be sought from local support staff.
- Institutions participating in the DS-Print service, pricing and location of printers and photocopying facilities at Where can I use DS-Print?.
All output through DS-Print service is subject to charging, although individual departments or colleges may provide a free quota to users. Many institutions, and UIS itself, charge by way of the Common Balance. In this system, users pre-pay (by debit or credit card or by cash) into a credit balance which can then be used for printing/copying on any device linked to the Common Balance. A small number of institutions operate their own charging schemes (against a student's College bill, for example).
The UIS provides self-service printing and photocopying in its own Managed Cluster rooms. These facilities offer a good range of print/copy finishing options including colour, A3, double sided (duplex) and staple. Additionally, at no charge, digital scan to email.
More sophisticated printing facilities are available from the UIS Print Room
